Esme

If Esme were honest, she’d held little hope of receiving a reply from Clara. So when the letter came, addressed all in capitals, in a brown envelope stamped HMS Holloway, she couldn’t have been more surprised or thrilled. She swept Jasper off the rocking chair, and against the backdrop of rain falling in a solid, unrelenting downpour, she withdrew the contents.

Pinned to the letter, was a note:

Dear Miss Fanstone,

Clara dictated this letter to me, so it is written in my hand, as she has no education. She also said should you wish to visit her, she’d be most pleased to see you. However, I want to caution you against getting up her hopes of release. Her crime was of the worst kind, and she has come to terms with her sentence of life imprisonment. She is known for befriending new prisoners and is a keen gardener.
